Through the Noise: a pink figure with a rainbow heart on her chest lifts her face as hearts pour down through bands of blue.

Through the Noise

Find your voice.

The first painting I loved just for me. It still sits by my bedside. I painted it before I could say what it meant. The stripes went down first: the grid, the rules, the noise we are all fed. The speckles at the top of her head are her mind, sorting through all of it. The heart inside her holds every color in clean rings, already whole. And the hearts she breathes out multiply as they pass through the noise. The noise doesn't disappear. She just stops letting it speak for her.

About the artist

I make art the way I make sense of life: through words, color, and noticing. Each piece starts as a moment I almost walked past, until I stopped and became the observer of my own perception. What's hiding in plain sight is often what matters most.

The work · 24 canvases

From noise, to self, to connection, to giving

The paintings are hung in the order they found me. Tap any piece to see it larger.

Prints are available of every piece, in several sizes.

Chapter 1

Chaos

Everything at once. Four worlds on one canvas, learning to be whole.

Four different worlds sharing one canvas: petals, spirals, dots and bricks. I couldn't leave any white space, and I didn't want to. When a yellow wash failed in the spiral corner, I didn't paint over it. I splattered neon green across it, and it became my favorite part.

The title splits beholder open to find be whole. Wholeness isn't sameness or perfection. It's every unmatched part, mistakes included, allowed to belong to one thing.

BeWholeDer

Four quadrants of hand-painted motifs: bricks, dots, spirals and petals. Small eyes hide in the pattern. The word beholder, split open to reveal be whole.

My daughter Confetti took one look and appointed herself my art dealer. She priced it at $3,000 and told me her cut would be 10%. At eight years old, she's the youngest dealer I know, and the most loyal fan of her mom's work. She has already moved a few of my paintings into her own room. Those ones, I'm not allowed to sell. Look closely: there are eyes hiding in the dots, looking back.

Chapter 2

Swirls

The chaos starts to move.

Untitled (eye)

A poured spiral eye in neon pink and blue, ringed with drips.

Weather Changes Within

Lightning, cloud and rain drawn over streaks of green and violet.

Every feeling gets a color, and every color gets a place. Storms move through all of us. It takes all kinds of weather, and all weather is beautiful.

Untitled (rain on swirls)

Bright blue drops falling over shimmering swirls of color.

Chapter 3

Ribbons

Movement becomes thread. Loops, knots and connection.

Ribbons

Wide bands of pink, plum, orange and green that loop and knot.

Currents

Organic shapes flowing around one another like water.

Chapter 4

Orbits

Finding structure, and what I keep circling back to.

One Orbit came first. Everyone is different, yet we are all connected, and love is what connects us. The arcs all bend around a center you can't see, somewhere off the canvas. Love isn't an object. You only know it's there by how everything bends toward it.

When I scraped the layers off One Orbit, I couldn't let the paint go to waste. So it overflowed onto four round canvases, the way love and light overflow when there is more than one place can hold. Each round is its own world, made from the same paint as its mother painting. Different, and the same.

Stone

Rough, diagonal scrapes of gold, teal and violet. More mineral than sky, like cut stone.

Made from the paint scraped off One Orbit.

Giant

Bands of magenta, gold and green, like the stripes of a gas giant. Turn it, and the bands turn with it.

Made from the paint scraped off One Orbit.

Home

The only world with a horizon: pink and gold sky over green ground. The most like home.

Made from the paint scraped off One Orbit.

River

Soft greens and gold with a cool current running through. The gentlest of the four.

Made from the paint scraped off One Orbit.

One Orbit

The full spectrum swept across a square in broad arcs.

Chapter 5

Connection

Every color belongs, even the ones that share an edge.

The rules helped me start. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet. Then my hand said no, and my heart said start. Red can touch yellow. Red can live in blue. Colors that don't belong, belong: they blend, or they share an edge, a yes from both sides.

Under these loops are the circles I painted first. I didn't let the canvas breathe. I buried them, and they still peek out at the edges, part of everything that came after. One pink line wanders through it all, tying each shape to the next. Breaking through doesn't mean leaving anyone behind. It means becoming part of each other.

Untitled (rainbow shapes)

Rainbow loops and outlined shapes overlapping and holding hands.

Chapter 6

Blooming

After connection comes growth.

Untitled (mountain sunset)

Two green peaks with a gold sun tucked between them, under a thick, textured sky of hot pink, coral and blue.

Nurturing Nature

An upside-down flower rains its petals as colorful drops.

Turn it one way and the flower rains its petals on the girl below. Turn it the other way and she is the one watering the flower. Who is nurturing whom depends on where you stand.

Untitled (oval garden)

Orange coneflowers drawn through streaks of blue, violet and gold.

Untitled (garden river)

Flowers and stars above a rainbow river.

Untitled (neon flowers)

Big neon blooms with paint flicked across white.

Adventure

Mixed media: a ribbon river, a frog, a butterfly and dimensional flowers.

Painted over one of my own abandoned canvases. The words underneath, yonder and life, still peek out at the edges if you look.

Chapter 7

Simplicity

Fewer colors, more peace. From the Fall in Love series.

My Fall in Love series. These were painted with a neon green that glows under black light, so they live a second life after dark.

Bright Light

A sun of orange rising from the corner, spraying light across white.

My favorite of the fall series. A sun rising from the corner, scattering light everywhere it can reach.

Seasons Change Within

A quiet block of washed orange, warm all the way through.

Let It All Happen

Sweeps of orange with neon green, falling exactly where they want to.

Chapter 8

Sharing

One image, two canvases. Made to be shared.

Each pair is one continuous painting across two canvases. Hang them stacked, side by side or staggered, and the image still connects. Sold first as a set: keep both, or give one half to someone you share a deep bond with.

We Glow Together

Pair

Two halves, Spark and Glow. The green is earth and the blue is water: two parts of the same world, and neither works without the other. The same is true of the person you share it with. Suns and circles bloom across the seam, circling and sharing edges any way they grow. We are all connected, and the light within us creates light others can see. Acrylic on two 22 × 28 in canvases.

The ring of small loops on the green half stands for four sets of threes that have made me.

Hidden Chorus

Pair

Two halves, Call and Answer. A guitar, swirls and hidden, half-finished birds carried across both canvases: music as birdsong, and nature all around us and part of us. Acrylic on two 22 × 28 in canvases.

Confetti's Studio

Confetti paints alongside me. She is the studio's curator, its gallery director, and an artist in her own right. This space is hers. She is also my art dealer, my first collector, and the keeper of a few of my paintings that live in her room and are not for sale.

Prints of all of Confetti's work are available in several sizes, including her first sale.
